“As a surgeon working in Port Alberni, I face the challenges of rural medicine. My colleagues and I strive to deliver precise, timely, up-to-date patient centered care.

A significant advancement in breast cancer surgery is seed localization.  The seed localization technology could enhance both surgical outcomes and patient experience. Traditionally we have used wire localization, which can be logistically challenging and anxiety-inducing for patients, often requiring same-day coordination between radiology and surgery. This is particularly difficult in rural settings where transportation, access, and scheduling flexibility are already limited.

Seed localization uses a tiny magnetic seed to mark tumors in advance of surgery.  Seed localization offers a safe, more flexible, and less stressful alternative for patients compared to wire localization.

By adopting seed localization at West Coast General Hospital, we can:

· Improve surgical accuracy and reduce reoperation rates,

· Enhance patient comfort by eliminating the need for same-day wire placement,

· Allow more efficient scheduling of surgeries and radiology procedures, and

· Provide cancer care similar to the care provide at other Island Health sites.

Support from the West Coast General Hospital Foundation would allow us to bring this evidence-based innovation to our hospital ensuring that our breast cancer patients receive the highest standard of care close to home.”
